"Ghosts Always Win, the latest release from Denver singer/songwriter Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt, finds the artist pushing himself sonically while honing the chamber-pop sensibilities that made 2011’s Tweaker in the Park such a promising debut. Here however, he uses a recording studio’s resources to not only flesh out this new set of tunes instrumentally but also reveal musical influences previously unexplored. The shimmering guitar riff of opener “New Wave” sounds like My Bloody Valentine’s sensitive teenage cousin — more sweet than noisy. Yet stylistically, Hypocrite is more eclectic than ever; from sticky, Gorillaz-inspired drum loops (“Easy to Buy”) to barn-burning piano ballads (the closing title track, perhaps the album’s finest moment), Ghosts is a showcase of an artist whose increasing ambition continues to reward listeners."
