"The New Planet, the latest release from one-man-band Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt, finds the artist adding new sonic flourishes to his signature brand of lo-fi slacker pop. The opening track “Sometimes” leads with an irrepressible guitar hook — channeling the raucous energy of ‘90s pop-rock kings Teenage Fanclub — before some woozy synthesizers that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Devo record kick in during the second verse.

But the songwriter continues to capitalize on their strengths here, deftly balancing sweet-natured melodies and sardonic lyrics. One of the album’s best songs, “It’s Only Tuesday,” builds frantic guitar picking against the anxious refrain of, “Gotta make it to the weekend,” until it bursts into a triumphant chorus. From gorgeous ballads (“The Arcade”) to fuzzed-out barn-burners (“I Won’t Go to Florida”), The New Planet is Hypocrite in a Hippy Crypt at both their most versatile and direct."
